Charlottetown Food Council Working to Develop a Local Food Asset Map

The Charlottetown Food Council is hosting a series of community workshops, pop-ups, and an online survey throughout the month of March to engage with residents and seek feedback on the City's first Food Asset Map.

The City of Charlottetown established the Charlottetown Food Council in July of 2018, made up of a group of volunteers with experience and expertise in various food related industries. Each of the members brings a unique perspective to the table and together they take a collaborative approach to improving the local food system.

The most recent project undertaken by the Food Council was the development of a Charlottetown Food Asset Map, which identifies the existing strengths and resources in the community. The development of this asset map will help the Food Council and other organizations gain a better understanding of the City's existing food system and identify opportunities to improve it through future partnerships, policies, and projects.

As part of the development of the Food Asset Map, the Charlottetown Food Council is hosting a number of community conversation workshops and pop-up events, which will provide community members an opportunity to engage with the new asset map and expand on it by identifying what they recognize as food assets in their area. Additionally, the workshops will give residents a chance to build community by connecting with others in their neighbourhood, meet Council members, and share ideas on how Charlottetown's food system can be celebrated and improved.

“These events are a great way to get out, meet your neighbours, and get to know about the food assets we have in our community,” said Councillor Terry MacLeod, chair of Environment and Sustainability. “Everyone's an expert on where they live and has something that they can contribute, with the idea that if you live and eat in Charlottetown then you are a part of the local food system.”

The community conversations will be 60 to 90 minute interactive workshops, hosted at various accessible facilities across Charlottetown. There will be prizes and giveaways, as well as refreshments provided. All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend one of these community conversations on food. “It is important that we engage in our communities to talk about our food system,” said Karen Murchison, chair of the Charlottetown Food Council. “Coming together to talk about food and where we stand in terms of what we have available to us is an invaluable step in determining how we can grow as a community.”

The schedule for the Community Conversation Workshops is as follows:
• Saturday, March 21 at Hillsborough Park Community Centre – 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, March 25 at West Royalty Community Centre (Upton Room) – 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, April 1 at the Charlottetown Fire Hall – Station 1 (Kent Street, 3rd floor) – 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Pop-up events across the City are also scheduled to take place throughout March for individuals who are unable to attend the Conversations but still would like to provide feedback. The Charlottetown Food Council has also released a survey on the Food Asset Map to allow the public to provide input and feedback. The survey is available online, as well as paper copies at City Hall (199 Queen Street), until Friday, March 27 at 4 p.m.
