Bike Week 2021

City of Charlottetown Announces Bike Week 2021
Posted on 06/04/2021
The City of Charlottetown is excited to announce that Bike Week will take place this year from June 14-21, 2021.

Bike Week is a collection of cycling-related events and initiatives intended to celebrate cycling in Charlottetown and to promote the safe use of active transportation. This year the City is encouraging residents to use their bikes to get wherever they may need to go: whether it be work, the grocery store, or out for coffee. Using cycling as a form of transportation is an important way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also making healthy choices.

As part of Bike Week, the City has partnered with go!PEI and Cynthia King, owner/operator of PEI Cycling Tours and a certified cycling coach and advocate, to offer Family Cycling Training. These free 90-minute sessions will be aimed at teaching families how to bike together safely. They will help both parents and children get more comfortable on their bikes and teach parents skills to guide their children when cycling. These small-group sessions will be held in participant’s neighbourhoods and customized to help families navigate their surroundings by bike. A limited number of participants will be selected based on availability in each neighbourhood. A range of dates and times are available. To apply to take part in one of these sessions, visit: www.charlottetown.ca/cycling

The City will also be launching an outdoor heritage exhibit called “Cycling in Charlottetown” to celebrate Bike Week. This exhibit will be displayed along the Victoria Park Active Transportation Pathway. Residents are encouraged to walk or cycle by and learn more about the history of cycling in Charlottetown.

On Wednesday, June 16, Mayor Brown will be hopping on his bicycle to go about his morning errands. To encourage residents to join in the fun, the City will be giving away a bike voucher from Outer Limit Sports (OLS). To enter the contest, residents are asked to tell us their favourite place to travel by bike. All entries must be in by 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16. The winner of the contest will be announced on Friday, June 18. For more information or to enter the contest, visit: www.charlottetown.ca/cycling. And stay tuned on the City’s social media accounts to follow along with the Mayor’s bike ride.

On Thursday, June 17, join PEI Bike Guy for the Thirsty Thursday MTB group mountain bike ride. Participants are asked to meet at the Parkman Soccer Complex parking lot at 6:30 p.m. This event is suitable for all skill levels of mountain bikers but is not an instructional ride. After the ride, the group is invited for a post-ride social meet-up at a local establishment. Riders will need a working mountain bike, helmet, and any tools or refreshments they will require during the ride.

Friday, June 18 will be declared Bike to Work and School Day. Residents are encouraged to cycle, or use any other mode of active transportation, to get to work, school, or wherever they may need to travel.

Keep an eye out for posts on the City’s social media pages all week long for chances to win great prizes!

A friendly reminder that helmets are required by law for all cyclists on PEI. Helmets are an essential component of staying safe while cycling and can help prevent serious injury in an accident. The City of Charlottetown has also completed an update to the Bike Map. This resource highlights the great cycling routes Charlottetown has to offer. The map has now been expanded to include a larger portion of the city. As always, it also highlights the city’s Bike Friendly Businesses where cyclists can get special offers and discounts when they visit on their bike.
