Posted on 07/04/2019
The City of Charlottetown will celebrate its 164th birthday with Natal Day events taking place August 1 to 4. Take in the Charlottetown Food Council’s Mid-Summer Garden Party, bring the whole family to Rochford Square for Family Yoga, grab a bite to eat at the Natal Day Pancake Breakfast and dance the night away at the Natal Day community dance.

The jam-packed weekend of free Natal Day events also includes: a skateboard, BMX and scooter competition; a celebration in honour of Forbes Kennedy; a seniors’ social with Mayor and Council; citizen recognition awards; the traditional Natal Day Parade and church service; as well as the Downtown Farmers’ Market presented by Downtown Charlottetown Inc., and VegPEI’s first vegan block party. The weekend wraps up with Afternoon Fun in the Park – children’s activities, birthday cupcakes and much more at Victoria Park.

“Natal Day is an opportunity to celebrate the incorporation of the City of Charlottetown – the City’s birthday – and we invite all residents and visitors to join in the fun,” said Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown. “We have included a few new activities this year so there’s something for everyone.”

On Thursday, August 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., join the Charlottetown Food Council at the Legacy Garden at 420 University Avenue for the Mid-Summer Garden Party featuring fresh local food, free activities, and music in the largest garden in Charlottetown. At 7 p.m., head to Beaconsfield Carriage House for the Mayor’s Citizen Recognition Awards to honour some of the people doing outstanding work in Charlottetown.

On Saturday August 3, at 8 a.m., relax with family yoga in Rochford Square before enjoying the annual pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The rain location for the pancake breakfast is Fire Station #1 at 89 Kent Street. The Skateboard, BMX and Scooter Competition, presented by Outer Limit Sports, will take place at the Victoria Park Skateboard Park with registration at 9:30 a.m. Helmets are mandatory. Prizes will be awarded.

In the afternoon, join Mayor Brown and City Council for entertainment and refreshments at the Natal Day Seniors’ Social at Murphy’s Pharmacies Community Centre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Natal Day Dance will take place at the West Royalty Community Centre from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The traditional Natal Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 4 at the Kent Street Fire Station. Mayor Brown, members of City Council, the Fire Department and Police Services, as well as military units will parade along Queen, Grafton, and Prince streets, concluding at Trinity United Church at 10:20 a.m. for the Natal Day church service.

The birthday celebrations continue with the open air Downtown Farmers’ Market, including more than 70 vendors, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Island’s first vegan block party will take place at Confederation Landing and include delicious vegan food, activities and music from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Afternoon Fun in the Park takes place from 1-4 p.m.

Also on Sunday, at 6 p.m., the public is invited to join the Mayor and Council at Beaconsfield Carriage House to honour Forbes Kennedy, along with the presentation of the inaugural Forbes Kennedy Volunteer of the Year Award.

“It’s wonderful to have the Natal Day events during the peak tourism season because it gives our many visitors the chance to join Islanders in the celebration of the Capital City and the Birthplace of Confederation,” said Councillor Kevin Ramsay, Chair of the City’s Economic Development, Tourism, and Events Management committee.
