The City of Charlottetown standing committees have been adjusted to provide councillors with additional learning opportunities and experience throughout the City corporation.

There are 11 standing committees with Council serving in the roles of Chair, Vice-Chair and Members at Large.

The committees oversee the policies and procedures of City departments and report back to Council with recommendations and resolutions for consideration.

The committees are: Council Advisory; Economic Development, Tourism, and Events Management; Environment and Sustainability; Finance, Audit, and Tendering; Human Resources, Communications, and Administration; Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Activities; Planning and Heritage; Protective and Emergency Services; Public Works and Urban Beautification; Strategic Priorities and Intergovernmental Cooperation; and, Water and Sewer Utility.

“It was determined by the Council Advisory Committee at the beginning of our term that we would review the committee structure mid-way through to ensure everyone gets a chance to try different committees,” said Councillor Terry MacLeod, Chair of the Council Advisory Committee until October 14 when he takes on the Public Works and Urban Beautification committee chairperson role. “I think it’s good for all of us to gain a new perspective and a deeper understanding of the work of the City departments.”

The changes include a new chairperson for each of the 11 committees. Other adjustments include new vice-chairs for six of the committees: Human Resources, Communications, and Administration; Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Activities; Planning and Heritage; Public Works and Urban Beautification; Strategic Priorities and Intergovernmental Cooperation, and Water and Sewer Utility.

The committee structure, which comes into effect on October 14, is available on the City’s website, along with the existing terms of reference or responsibilities for each committee. The information is available by clicking on the Mayor and Council button at the top of the City's homepage.
