Posted on 06/24/2019
The City of Charlottetown’s Tourism Officer Laurel Lea has been crowned the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Atlantic Canada Chapter Rising Star. The MPI awards were handed out at the 7th Annual Industry Awards Gala, which was created to shine the spotlight on some of Atlantic Canada’s leading event professionals.

This was the second year for the Rising Star Award, and it was presented at the Halifax Convention Centre.

“It’s always exciting when one of our own is recognized for their efforts in moving the municipality forward,” said Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown. “The City of Charlottetown is a leader in the event industry, and one of the reasons for that is the great complement of staff we have working on our event files. Congratulations to Laurel on winning this award.”

Since joining the City as the Tourism Officer in 2017, Laurel Lea has continued to build on the success of the City’s civic celebrations such as Canada Day, Natal Day, Charlottetown Christmas Parade, the Victoria Park Sunset Series and Capital New Year. She has also contributed to the City’s success as an event hosting destination. Earlier this year, she took home the 2018 Canadian Sport Tourism Association (CSTA) Sport Tourism Rising Star of the Year Award, which recognizes the 'next-gen' of sport tourism professionals in Canada, acknowledging emerging leaders who have already demonstrated commitment, creativity, and dynamic energy in the sport tourism industry.

“We are proud of Laurel for winning this award,” said Councillor Kevin Ramsay, Chair of the City’s Economic Development, Tourism and Events Management Committee.” On behalf of the committee, I’d like to publicly congratulate Laurel and thank her for the invaluable work that she does for the City of Charlottetown.”
