City of Charlottetown’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) was created in partnership with the community and acts as a template for a long-term strategic plan to help the City reach its sustainability goals. The goals set out in the plan set a trajectory to work within the confines of current demands on our natural resources, reduce our ecological footprint, and find ways to meet our needs without further jeopardizing our health and environment. The plan incorporates four pillars: environmental, economic, social, and cultural.

The inaugural ICSP was launched in 2010 with an update released in 2017. The 2017 ICSP details the review program followed by a series of value statements and Goals and actions relating to ten themes: Water, Energy, Transportation, Food, Healthy Economy, Infrastructure and the Built Environment, People and Places, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Active Healthy Living, and Nature.

At five years since the last update to the ICSP was done, and with many of its Goals and Actions completed, it is due for a revamp. In the last five years, a lot has changed and it has become clear that strong climate action is required to address the pressing climate issues faced globally and locally. As such, the City has begun work to create a Climate Action Plan that will combine the mandates of the ICSP and Community Energy Plan as well as incorporate additional climate adaptation and mitigation measures. Phase One – Discovery is set to begin in early 2023 with a completed plan anticipated in early 2024.
