The Charlottetown Fire Department conducts fire extinguisher training for the city– anytime, anywhere. The Bullseye™ Laser-Driven Fire Extinguisher Training System allows us to train safely in any setting in an office building, school, or at the department. The Bullseye eliminates the time consuming cleanup and expense associated with using an actual extinguisher, allowing us to train more people in less time. Those groups, organizations, restaurants interested in knowing how to operate a fire extinguisher are asked to contact the department

Directed at the grade four level, this is a program sponsored by the community where educational interactive booklets and dvd are given to the children to enhance their knowledge of fire safety.

The Charlottetown Fire Department holds an open house, at Station 1 in conjunction with the city's winter fun weekend. Children visit the station, chat with the firefighters and enjoy spending an afternoon viewing the trucks, equipment and Sparky.

Fire Safety Educational sessions are offered to various groups such as boy scouts, beavers, youth groups, new comers, adult educational facilities and organizations who request information on fire safety. Material is presented to the particular occupancy or organization requesting the information.

During the months of May & June elementary schools are invited to attend the fire department, participate in an educational session and tour the station. In September & October the preschool classes are hosted at the station. Anyone wanting to book a tour please call 629-4082. This is opened to the public.

The Learn Not to Burn® (LNTB®) fire safety education program is available to Charlottetown elementary school children. Based on the National Fire Protection Association's outline there are activities to teach fire safety behaviors (e.g., Stop, Drop and Roll, crawl low under smoke) in a way that children can understand and remember. This program has been credited with saving lives throughout North America. LNTB® focuses on teaching 22 key fire safety behaviors to children from kindergarten to grade 3.

There is also a Learn Not to Burn preschool program designed to teach eight simple but important lifesaving behaviors to children in preschool and day-care centers.

Statistics show that adults over age 65 are at the highest risk of being killed or injured in a fire. To address this serious problem, the Charlottetown Fire Department offers the fire safety program Older & Wiser, specifically for older adults. The program is consists of eight fire safety behaviors that the department offers to senior housing, community care facilities and senior groups interested in learning more about fire safety. TAPP-C is based on the premise that for most youth, fire-setting is a behavioral problem that can be corrected with a combination of education and psychological counselling. The TAPP-C Program is a fire prevention initiative that provides strategies to reduce fire-setting behaviors amongst children and helps determine why a child has been involved with fire and whether he/she is likely to continue to be involved with fire. The Charlottetown Fire department plays a key role in the education, identification and the referral of youth fire-setters. The program focuses on educating children aged 2-17 about appropriate fire safety behaviors. If you are a parent and you are concerned about possible fire-setting behavior of your child please contact the Fire Department directly to access TAPP-C services.

Smoke alarms are proven to greatly increase your chance of surviving a fire emergency in your home. Home visits are made in Charlottetown during the spring/summer months to ensure there are working smoke alarms in all homes. The smoke alarm program assists people whom because of age, physical or mental limitations or financial reasons are not able to install or maintain a smoke alarm in their home. Although door to door visitations are seasonal the department can be contacted any time regarding the smoke alarm program.

Twice a year the fire department in conjunction with neighboring fire departments join their partner, McDonald's restaurant in promoting change your clock…change your battery. Firefighters provide customers with batteries for their smoke alarms along with educational material and fire safety information.

Firefighters visit schools providing information and education to the different grade levels interested in fire prevention. Each grade level is designed with different materials and information applicable to their level. If you would like a firefighter to visit your classroom please call 629-4082.
