Operation Releaf Relaunches for Spring 2024

City of Charlottetown Relaunches Operation Releaf for Spring 2024
Posted on 04/04/2024
The City of Charlottetown is proud to announce Operation Releaf is back for a second year. Operation Releaf was created in partnership with Tree Canada and provides eligible homeowners the opportunity to plant a single large, climate resilient tree on their private property.

“This is a very valuable initiative for our community,” said Councillor Terry Bernard, Chair of Environment and Sustainability Committee. “Trees are essential for our health and well-being, as well as for mitigating the impacts of climate change. We hope that re-launching this program will continue to inspire residents to rebuild the urban forest, which serves an important role in the identity of Charlottetown.”

Last year, the City and Tree Canada partnered to provide 175 large climate resilient trees to Charlottetown homeowners as a part of Operation Releaf. The City and Tree Canada have committed to continuing this successful program in 2024. A maximum of 100 eligible homeowners will be able to receive a tree for $20 this spring, with a further 50-75 applicants receiving trees in a fall round of planting. Applications for the spring planting phase are open from April 5 to May 17 or until all trees are assigned.

Tree species offered this year include red maple, sugar maple, red oak, crab-apple "dolgo" and autumn brilliance serviceberry.

Homeowners must meet the program criteria and be willing to dig the hole for the tree in an agreed location. If more than 100 applications are received before May 17, priority will be given to those who indicate that financial barriers would prevent them from planting trees on their property without this program, and to those residential properties in priority areas with highest tree canopy loss.

Criteria, information on priority areas and the application are online at charlottetown.ca/releaf or contact the City’s Environment and Sustainability Department at (902) 629-6620 for more information.
