Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown Today Issued the Following Statement for Remembrance Day:
Posted on 11/08/2024
“Each year on November 11, we gather as a community to pause, reflect and honour the sacrifices made by all Islanders and Canadians who have served in the military. From the First and Second World Wars to the Korean War and peacekeeping missions around the world, the bravery and selflessness shown by our soldiers have shaped not only our history but the very essence of who we are as a nation.
Charlottetown, the “Birthplace of a Nation,” has long carried a legacy of unity and strength. Our community’s contributions during times of conflict stand as a testament to our resilience. Thousands of Islanders answered the call, leaving behind families, farms and livelihoods to fight for the freedoms we now cherish. Many did not return and countless others bore scars both seen and unseen.
Their sacrifices forged the foundation upon which Canada grew — a nation dedicated to peace, democracy and the protection of human rights. As we look around us today, we see a community enriched by diversity, equity and inclusiveness, guided by principles for which our forebears fought.
On this Remembrance Day, let us not only remember those who served, but also reflect on the legacy they have left behind. The freedoms we enjoy are not without cost, and it is our duty to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
We will remember them.”
Philip Brown
Mayor of Charlottetown
