City Provides Update on Official Plan

City Provides Update on Official Plan
Posted on 07/11/2024
As work on updating the City of Charlottetown’s Official Plan continues to move forward, the City would like to update the public on the next steps towards the Plan’s completion.

In 2023, the City began the process of updating its Official Plan. A new plan presents an opportunity to address several growth-related challenges facing Charlottetown today and in the future through planning policy. This plan will establish the municipality's general land use planning policies and ensure that growth is coordinated to meet the community's needs.

The new plan will also provide the framework for establishing municipal zoning bylaws, updating secondary plans and creating design standards and guidelines that align with the City’s strategic pillars, which include community building and placemaking, governance and civic engagement, infrastructure and the environment and inclusive economic growth.

Four open house events were held between May 6-8, 2024. These public consultation sessions were held to solicit feedback from the community. From these sessions, a “What We Heard” report was created, which summarizes the feedback, insights and key takeaways gathered during the sessions and arranges them according to the following themes:

• Transportation
• Housing & Residential Areas
• Parks, Recreation & Open Space
• Economic Development
• Climate Change & Environment
• Urban Design
• Heritage
• Arts & Culture
• Process & Governance

A public hearing of Council will be held in fall 2024 to discuss the proposed policies. This hearing will allow residents to voice their opinions and engage with the proposed policies. After the public hearing, the next steps will involve recommending Council approval and seeking subsequent Ministerial sign-off to complete the process.

Residents are encouraged to continue to submit feedback on the Official Plan via email to [email protected] up to July 31, 2024, to ensure the Plan reflects the needs and aspirations of all residents.
