The City of Charlottetown hosts an annual Business Tree Planting Challenge to engage businesses in sustainability and promote tree planting in the City. The Business Planting Tree Challenge, originally put forward by McInnes Cooper Law Firm in 2014, gives businesses who participate the opportunity to offset their paper use by planting a certain number of trees. It is also a great team-building exercise!
Businesses interested in taking part must provide the City with an estimate of the number of sheets of paper they used in the past year. The City will calculate the approximate number of trees they need to plant to compensate for this paper use. The equation, which is cited by Conservatree.org, is based on one tree producing 8,333 sheets of paper.
For the 2024 Business Tree Challenge, the cost is $20/tree and a $50 mandatory fee per group towards the purchase of mulch and compost. Businesses must also provide volunteers to plant the trees. The City will provide instruction on tree planting.
