Posted on 05/20/2020
The City of Charlottetown Fire Department reminds residents, landlords and property owners of important fire safety requirements concerning the use of outdoor cooking equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable season for all citizens.

The National Fire Protection Association 1: Fire Code, as adopted in the Charlottetown Fire Prevention Bylaw, details the following information:

• For other than one- and two-family dwellings, no hibachi, grill, or other similar devices used for cooking, heating, or any other purpose shall be used or kindled on any balcony, under any overhanging portion, or within 10 feet (3 m) of any structure.

• For other than one- and two-family dwellings, no hibachi, grill, or other similar devices used for cooking shall be stored on a balcony.

The Fire Code has a provision for the installation of permanent outdoor cooking equipment, but anyone looking to install permanent cooking equipment should contact the Charlottetown Fire Department first to ensure the equipment is listed for that use and can be installed in accordance with its listing, applicable codes, and manufacturer's instructions.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the requirement or safe placement and use of approved outdoor cooking equipment, can contact the Charlottetown Fire Department at 902-629-4083 or 902-894-3623. Related emails can be sent to: [email protected] or [email protected]
