Charlottetown and Summerside Work Together

Charlottetown and Summerside Work Together on Community Priorities

On Thursday, April 17, elected officials and staff from Charlottetown and Summerside held a productive roundtable discussion chaired by mayors Philip Brown and Dan Kutcher at Credit Union Place in Summerside.

As PEI’s urban centres, Charlottetown and Summerside play a vital role in driving the province’s economy, providing essential public services, and supporting inclusive and sustainable growth. Approximately one-third of all Islanders call the cities home, and many more Islanders and visitors rely on the municipalities to access the programs and services they need and places they enjoy.

At the same time, the two cities face common challenges and mounting financial pressures due to rapid population growth, rising public safety costs and escalating social challenges.

In the spirit of co-operation, the cities are committed to working more closely together on issues and opportunities of mutual interest and shared responsibility, such as; official plans, zoning bylaws, community safety, climate action, fiscal revenue-sharing and event co-hosting.

Charlottetown and Summerside will continue to co-ordinate their efforts in advocacy, strategic planning and more effective delivery of services, while staying committed to open dialogue, healthy conversations and meetings between the two cities and elected members of Council.
